Dr Sheila Redfern, head of family trauma at the Centre, and Dr Theresa Schwaiger, a clinical psychologist who works for the centre’s family trauma service, will be among the speakers offering guidance to nursery staff around how to support children in their setting.

Camilla Rosan, head of Anna Freud’s Early Years Programme, said, ‘When we surveyed nursery staff last year, 69 per cent said they had experienced working with children affected by trauma or abuse, and 71 per cent said they had worked with children affected by domestic violence. But this isn’t a subject that’s covered much when it comes to early years training. So, in this webinar we’ll be letting early years staff know some different ways that they can support and nurture these children when they join their setting.’

Louise Jackson, deputy head at St Lawrence’s primary school and nursery in Shropshire, will also be speaking about her experiences of working with children who are affected by trauma or abuse at her settings.

She said, ‘Early years staff need to be fully informed about the ways they can help young children in their setting who have encountered abuse or trauma - so that they can help them to recover and reconnect with those around them. Knowing the right things to do, and what to say, early on in a child’s life could change the way that child experiences the world in the future.’

This free webinar for early years staff will take place on Thursday June 24 from 4:30 - 6pm.
