From home to nursery for childminder

A childminder's home childcare business is expanding into a purpose-built nursery setting.

Honey Beez Childcare, which practises the Montessori method and has 12 children enrolled, currently operates from a converted terraced house opposite Sunderland Royal Hospital in Tyne and Wear.

Early next year it is moving to a former nursery above a soft play area five miles away to accommodate the growing business.

Owner Claire Greensit said, 'Because of the lack of space in our current setting, we are limited as to what activities we can do with the children. Having rooms across two floors is also not very practical, as I am disabled.

'A parent told me about the empty premises above the soft play area where she works. It was the perfect opportunity, as our lease is coming to an end and there is a real demand for childcare in the area where the new nursery is based.'

The new nursery will be registered for 33 children aged from three months to five years. It will be open until 8pm and offer a pick-up service for parents who do not drive.

Children will have access to a large outdoor space and attend sessions at the soft play area beneath the nursery two days a week.

Ms Greensit said that she would be employing three more members of staff, bringing the total number of practitioners working at the new nursery to eight.

A former primary school teacher, Ms Greensit opened Honey Beez Childcare after she developed severe arthritis that forced her to quit her job. Ms Greensit said that she wanted to continue working with young children and thought that with her experience, starting a childcare business would be ideal.
