General Election 2024: Voters across the UK head to the polls

Good morning from the Nursery World team on the day of the 2024 General Election. Over the next two days, we will be reporting on the events of the election.

As polling stations opened across the country at 7am this morning, the polls were predicting a ‘landslide’ victory for the Labour party, with leader Sir Keir Starmer expected to become the new Prime Minister and form a government.

A Nursery World snap Twitter/X poll (see below) last month also suggested Labour is the most popular among the sector with 56 per cent of the 52 people that took part voting for the party.

On the day of the election, single parent charity Gingerbread is encouraging parents to take photos of them and their children outside polling stations, sharing them on social media under #KidsAtPollingStations

Results of the election are expected from 11:30pm and to continue into the early hours of the morning (Friday 5 July).

While there were concerns voter turnout would be low, the Conservative party has said its 'teams on the ground' have reported that 'turnout is higher than expected'.

We also want to hear from you about what you're doing with the children in your setting on polling day. How have you been talking about the general election and 'voting' in your nursery, pre-school, school or childminding setting? What general election-related activities have you been doing? We'd love to see your photos!
