Grandparents offered training on modern parenting skills

A new 'refresher' course to help support grandparents who look after their grandchildren has been launched by the online community Grannynet.
The five-week programme, entitled ‘Becoming a Granny Carer’, launches next month, and aims to refresh and update grandparents’ parenting skills to give them the confidence to be more ‘hands on’ with their grandchildren.

Grandmothers attending the free course, led by a midwife, will learn how to resuscitate a baby and cope with choking, and be given the latest advice on baby-led weaning and nutrition, along with information on safety in the home and how to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Grannynet hopes that the course will act as a springboard for grandparents caring for their grandchildren to set up support networks.

Verity Gill, founder of Grannynet said, ‘We are really excited about the launch of this initiative. My mother cares for my two children one day a week and would have loved the opportunity to go on a course like ours. We hope to make sure our grandparents are fully armed to do the best possible job they can for their growing families.’

The Grannynet course will be held at Burham Children’s Centre in Kent on 7 October and run for five-weeks.
