New qualification to prepare childminders for EYE

A new Level 3 short course has been launched to help childminders move to Early Years Educator status.

Preparing to Work in Home-Based Childcare is aimed at people wanting to operate in a home-based childcare setting as a registered childminder, childminding assistant, nanny or au pair.

It was developed following the introduction of the Early Years Educator (EYE) as an introduction and potential progression route to EYE status.

The month-long course is offered as both a face to face and an e-learning basis. It is divided into two parts, the first dealing with how to work effectively with children in a home-based childcare role, while the second covers how to set up and run a home-based childcare business.

Students should set aside approximately 50 hours for study. On successful completion the award provides six credits.

According to the awarding body, CACHE, students should be able to achieve the qualification while balancing work commitments and family life.

The qualification has been developed in conjunction with the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years, PACEY, who have developed pre-registration qualifications since the regulation of childminders by Ofsted in 2001.

Those doing it the qualification through PACEY will have the support of online materials and free PACEY learner membership when completing the work.

The new course will be available from September 2014
