The All Party Parliamentary Groups for Social Mobility and Parents and Families have come together to launch the inquiry ahead of the General Election.
Its aim is to build on the work undertaken as part of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Social Mobility’s ‘Seven Key Truths about Social Mobility’ 2012 report, which found that the point of greatest leverage for social mobility is what happens between birth to three, primarily in the home.
The inquiry will examine the link between parenting and social mobility outcomes, the role of parenting support schemes, and how this support could be improved.
It will also consider potential models for a national parenting programme or campaign.
The first evidence session of the inquiry will take place on Monday 26 January, with a further session to be held in Parliament on 9 February. The report will be published in March.
Baroness Claire Tyler, co-chair of the APPG for Social Mobility, said, ‘I am delighted that this important issue is receiving the attention it so clearly deserves. Evidence shows that the role of parenting is fundamental in promoting social mobility, and it is important that we investigate how parenting support can be enhanced, and the supporting role that both Government and other agencies can provide, especially in the current economic climate.
‘By making this a joint inquiry, we will be able to draw on the skills and expertise in both of the all party groups and their wider networks, and build on the excellent work that has already been undertaken in this area.’
Anand Shukla, chief executive of the Family and Childcare Trust - the secretariat for both party groups - said, ‘It is fantastic that the Family and Childcare Trust are playing an integral role in this inquiry. Having extensive experience of working with parents and families, we are in an ideal position to provide the necessary support and guidance in investigating this essential issue, and in arriving at much needed recommendations.’
