Sign up for our schools masterclass with Prof Tina Bruce

Careers & Training Management
Leading early years educator Professor Tina Bruce CBE will be taking to the floor as part of a fantastic line-up of speakers for a morning masterclass at the Nursery World Show 2016 on February 6.

Forming part of an extensive seminar programme to be held over the two-day event, 'Early years provision in schools - policy and practice' aims to help schools achieve the best outcomes for young children through high-quality ‘enabling environments’ and skilled and supportive practitioners.

Speakers will explore the drive towards more early years provision in schools, how to meet the emotional and learning needs of the individual child, transitions and assessment.

Outlining the current challenges and essential starting points for setting children on the path to becoming effective learners is Dr Julian Grenier, head teacher of Sheringham Nursery School and Children's Centre, London (a national Teaching School) and a National Leader of Education (NLE).

Next, Prof Bruce will set out best practice underpinned by the principles of the EYFS. As well as touching on her own pioneering work — the ten principles of early childhood education and the 12 features of play — she will focus on the Froebel approach to early education and its continuing relevance to all early years settings today.

You will hear how Froebel’s legacy permeates the EYFS, particularly in the Characteristics of Effective Learning, with their emphasis on active, experiential learning and critical thinking but also in areas such as outdoor learning and ‘Understanding the World’. To follow will be ‘best practice’ case studies by Jane Whinnett and Lynn McNair.

Rounding off the morning’s session is Jan Dubiel, national development manager at Early Excellence and former QCA lead on the EYFS Profile, who will look at how to build a holistic picture of the child while meeting all 'baseline' requirements.

MICHAEL ROSEN AND MORE…

Leading our Friday (5 February) masterclass - We're going on a language hunt - is author, poet and broadcaster Michael Rosen.

He will be joined by Penny Tassoni and Alice Sharp to explore the invaluable role of story and rhyme in early learning and language development, and gain ideas for story sharing and story telling, along with a special focus on stories and rhymes for birth to threes.

As well as the masterclasses is a programme of 20 hour-long seminars which includes:

  • · Preparing for Ofsted inspection
  • · Challenge and adventure in children's learning outdoors with Kathryn Solly
  • · The place of ICT in early learning environments with Harriet Price
