Spotlight on ... David Lord

Nursery manager at Kiddi Caru Torquay

What was your first reaction when you found out you'd won the Kiddi Caru special achievement award?

I wasn't expecting it; it really took me by surprise. I was proud of the work of the team. It was a very proud moment for me to know that I am valued by the company.

What do you consider to be your biggest achievement?

Coming into a nursery and achieving an 'outstanding' Ofsted for the nursery was a big achievement. I'm also proud of standing by what I wanted to do in the beginning when there weren't a lot of men in the childcare sector.

Can you tell us what your plans are for the future?

To continue what we did last year, keep going forward, keep making opportunities for children and continue to make a difference by doing what we do well, which is giving the children a good-quality education.

Why did you decide to start working in early years childcare?

When I was younger I remember my teachers, and I remember them making a real difference to my education. I remember thinking I wanted to be able to make a difference one day and be a teacher that children would remember later on.
