Why did you decide to open a new nursery?

During my four years as a nursery manager I decided I wanted to do things my way using my own knowledge and experience. Buying my own premises was the original plan but nurseries are so costly and nursery salaries are not fantastic, as we all know. In the end I was told I would need to lease premises. It took five years to find the right place. Maybe I’m too fussy! But in the end the church hall I found was absolutely perfect, opposite a park and with land for a garden. The children can get muddy exploring the outdoors, bug-hunting and making mud pies. The messier and more exciting for children, the better.

How have you put together your team?

I wasn’t keen on the idea of a pre-established team. I wanted to start from scratch. I was lucky enough to find a little gem who I took straight on as deputy manager. As well as answering all the standard questions and passing checks, I look for a little spark in employees. I can only explain this spark as ‘people skills, and a little bit bonkers’. I read once that children are more likely to learn or remember something if they have an emotional response to it. This has always stuck in my mind. What better response than laughter?

Do you have plans for expansion?

Our two rooms will only cater for 24 children in total. We are looking to run an out-of-school club, but I like the idea of staying ‘small and mighty’. We are lucky enough to have broken even before we open the doors, so I’m happy. Anything further is just a bonus.
