Ofsted's quarterly statistics on the number of registered childcare providers and places in England have always given a really useful snapshot of trends in the early years sector.
While the number of total childcare places has been rising in recent years, the sharp decline in the ranks of childminders has gone almost unnoticed (see News, page 4).
Talking about sensitive issues is a good route to more reflective practice.
The early years sector needs to let politicians know what they want from any government.
