Lead practitioner, The Nursery in Portishead

What made you want to get into childcare?

I’ve always loved children and as far back as I can remember I have always been surrounded by them: cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends’ children. With this in mind, coupled with the fact I loved health and social care at school, it seemed a very natural thing for me to choose a career in childcare when I left school.

What are the highlights of your career so far?

Just before Christmas, Jackie Hardie, owner of The Nursery, asked me if I would be interested in travelling to the French Alps to work for a couple of weeks. The Nursery provides staff training for Ski Famille, a company that specialises in family ski holidays in the French Alps, and I was offered the chance to share best practice with them.

I had never flown before but within two weeks I was making new friends, taking children to ski-school, ice-skating with toddlers and enjoying snow play with lots of little ones. The trip was character-building for me; I was pushed out of my comfort zone and I have a newfound confidence.

It has helped enormously with my professional development and I got a great deal of satisfaction helping to coach unqualified staff as well as working with the children. This was definitely one of my highlights. Also, being promoted twice in two years before I reached the age of 21 and being part of a team that provides support and ongoing continuing professional development opportunities.

Are you concerned about your future in this industry, given the current political climate?

I think people will always need good quality childcare and as we at The Nursery focus on providing the best possible care, I feel this will always naturally attract parents whatever the political climate. I want to continue to work at The Nursery and grab every opportunity that comes my way to expand my experience that will in turn benefit the children I work with.
