A Unique Child: Inclusion - Light fantastic

Disabled and able-bodied children are playing together happily with sensory equipment that's out of this world. Melanie Defries reports.

A sensory studio that encourages disabled and able-bodied children to play together is making a difference to the lives of more than 1,000 children from across the north-east of England. Funky World in Hartlepool was launched by a community interest company last August and has thrived since it opened, despite the difficult economic climate.

It was founded by Steve Langley, who previously worked for a charity for people with disabilities. The studio is accessed regularly by families and a wide range of organisations, including nurseries, parent and toddler groups, childminders, primary schools and out-of-school clubs.
