Continuing professional development: Exciting route to play therapy

Careers & Training
A new approach to higher level study makes this discipline even more appealing, says Karen Faux.

The MA in Practice-Based Play Therapy has become more accessible since the Academy of Play and Child Psychotherapy opened a blended-learning route last November.

The course is the final stage in a three-stage training programme for play therapists. Advantages of the blended-learning route include students being able to work at home at their own pace, save money on travel and accommodation costs and have personalised tutor support.

Programme leader Debi Maskell-Graham says, 'Play therapy represents an excellent career development option for professionals working with young children and their families. It is particularly suited to those who wish to utilise their existing skills and experience to develop a therapeutic role in supporting children to the very best start.'

The course is offered through a series of online sessions, each of indeterminate time. There is also online group work and a series of directed learning tasks to explore different research approaches. The dissertation takes the form of a final professional paper of around 12,000 words.

The course can provide a springboard to apply research methodology to play therapy scenarios, and understand evidence-based practice. For example, it examines how research can inform policy and practice and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and programmes.

Ms Maskell-Graham says the blended learning route has seen an increase in student numbers, particularly in those from overseas. 'Students have great flexibility in how and when to complete the course. A mixture of zip file folders containing multi-format materials with live webinars and masterclasses means that much of the course is self-directed. Students also have the close support of an academic supervisor who acts as a mentor and tutor.'

She adds, 'Students are enjoying the new format, although of course any MA level course is demanding. They write their own study plan and enjoy being able to programme their work to fit around their individual needs. Students are making good progress with many embarking on fascinating research projects which will lead towards their final dissertations. It is very exciting!'
