Editor's view - first glance at the revised EYFS

The EYFS review was never going to be easy, but there are some peculiarities in the revised framework.

Nursery World's fantastic Communication Masterclass last week coincided with the Government's publication of the proposed revised EYFS framework.

This was great timing in some ways, but as the details were only released at 6.30am that morning, Helen Moylett, speaking on policy and practice, had to do some hasty reading on the train and had no time to redo her overhead slides.

Although, at first sight, many of Dame Clare Tickell's laudable EYFS Review recommendations have rightly been taken on board, there are also omissions and amendments that may have significant effects.

There must be reasons for the changes, whether politically-inspired or otherwise. The plea by Tickell for reception class ratios to be looked at has been ignored - the rule of up to 30 children to one teacher remains. What is more, schools with mixed age early years provision can use their 'discretion' to decide ratios - which could mean funding constraints are the determining factor, rather than children's needs.
