Self-regulation helps children to monitor and adjust their thoughts and actions, or manage emotions, with increasing independence.

This is crucial for supporting children’s executive function – a set of skills, often applied together, which enable children greater control over their thoughts and actions. This could be their ability to ignore distractions, adapt their actions to suit the changing context of a game, and remember the rules as the game progresses.
