As the Government encourages parents into work, there is a growing demand for childcare from students and those re-training. Tapping into this market and being aware of the financial support available for parents can help nursery owners improve occupancy figures. If you can develop links with your local colleges and promote the assistance available, then you are making a positive contribution to the well-being of your business. Forms of assistance include:

- Care to Learn

This helps with the cost of childcare and travel costs up to £160 per week for parents under 20 years old, when they start a publicly funded course. It can also pay for a deposit (up to £250) or registration fee (up to £80). Fees to retain a place during holiday periods can also be covered. Contact the helpline on 0845 600 2809 or your local Connexions Advisor via www.connexions-direct.com.

- The Childcare Support Fund

Further Education colleges administer Childcare Support Funds for student parents on benefits or low incomes. These funds can also go towards additional costs in travelling to and from a childcare provision. Contact Student Awards or the college welfare officer.

- Childcare Grant

Grants are available to full-time students to help with the cost of registered childcare fees. The level of assistance depends on income and actual childcare costs. It may be as much as 85 per cent, subject to a maximum of £175 for one child and £300 for two. Details can be found on a fact sheet on www.direct.gov.uk.

- NHS Bursary Allowance

Students in receipt of an NHS funded bursary can apply for extra help with registered childcare costs as long as they or their spouse do not receive the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit. The allowance is calculated individually but it can be up to a maximum of 85 per cent of the actual costs, subject to a ceiling of £119.85 a week for one child and £178.50 for two. Information is available via www.nhspa.gov.uk/sgu or by calling the NHS Pensions Agency Student Childcare Helpline on 0845 358 6655.
