All providers: Staff appraisals are extremely important. They allow you to give positive and constructive feedback to your staff and also help create a culture in which employees want to improve and progress. This will help with retention in what is traditionally a sector with a high turnover. Appraisals also allow you to spot and deal with performance issues quickly.
Avoid: If you need to apply for a new Ofsted registration (e.g. because you are a new operator opening a setting or if you are buying the business and assets of a nursery) give yourself plenty of time. It can take up to 26 weeks to obtain the registration. Some of the delay is due to local authority checks i.e. social services who need to report back to Ofsted before registration can take place.
