Promoting Well-Being...Growing Plants

Annabelle Padwick is the founder of Life at No27, a non-profit organisation using plant-growing sessions in nurseries and schools to support children struggling with loneliness and mental and physical ill-health.

‘A lot of us struggle with mental health and well-being when we lack control over our choices. In my sessions, I like to give children the opportunity to decide themselves what they want to sow or pick. There is always a finished product at the end which children have made and can keep at nursery or take home with them. This sense of achievement is good for well-being.

‘I provide some activities which can be done inside for settings without a lot of outdoor space. However, getting outside is great for engaging all the senses and really connecting with the world. It is more calming than a confined space. If children can remember positive experiences of the outside world when they are young, they are more likely to return to it as adults. This will support their mental health and well-being later in life too.’
