Out went the tarmac and in came log cabins and sensory gardens when two nurseries gained outdoor grants. Karen Faux reports.

Two settings run by Rosy Apple Childcare - the Headstart Pre-School Centre in Preston and Little Achievers at Country Fields Nursery in Blackburn - have each been given £20,000 Early Years Capital Grant funding to transform their outdoors space.

Sharon Alexander, managing director of Rosy Apple, says, 'As a team of staff, from all levels, we sat down and planned what we wanted to achieve for outdoor play in all five of our nurseries in Lancashire. Helen Mitchell, our early years consultant, helped us to establish a clear vision of natural beauty.'

This was particularly challenging at the Headstart Nursery, which is based in Preston city centre and provides childcare for employees of Lancashire County Council. Its existing outdoor provision consisted of tarmac, bricks and plastic toys.
