Work Matters: Management - Learn from a critical friend

Mentoring, whether from a colleague or an outside professional, enables staff to aim higher, argues trainer Deslynne Roberts.

Mentoring is defined as a 'professional one-to-one relationship with a senior or more experienced individual who gently coaxes, supports and advises another person's development and progress in the workplace'.

The mentoring process begins with a clear understanding of the role of mentor and mentee. Both parties need to be clear and in agreement of the roles each one should play, the objectives, and how this relationship is going to develop to ensure those objectives are achieved.

When mentoring is most effective, it can be said to have had an aspirational or inspirational effect on the individual.

When that individual aspires to achieve, succeed or progress beyond their current position, they intrinsically aim to be in a better position or place within a particular time frame or within a particular role.
