50 MPs call for nanny register

More than 50 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion calling for the Government to register nannies. The Early Day Motion was proposed earlier this month by Geraint Davies, Labour MP for Croydon Central, the constituency of Linda Bayfield, the former childminder currently in jail for the manslaughter of eight-month-old Joshua Osborne while in her care. He said he was appalled that nannies are the only unregulated childcarers and that they should be regulated just as childminders are.

The motion states, 'This House notes with concern the recent conviction of the nanny Kelly Lawrence for the assault on the children in her care; notes that nannies are not subject to registration and regulation; notes that this lack of registration means that the Working Families Tax Credit is unavailable to pay nannies; and believes nannies should be subject to registration and regulation immediately.'
