75m direct to childcare providers while parents in training

Early years and childcare providers will receive money paid directly to them under a new Government scheme to help unemployed parents pay for childcare while they attend training.

Under the £75m three-year scheme to help parents back into education and training, some 50,000 parents on low incomes will receive help with weekly childcare costs of up to £205.

The Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work programme will support low-income families where one parent is working and the other parent wants to return to work.

It will be administered by the Learning and Skills Council and will start in January in the 67 local authorities across England with the highest number of eligible families, to be extended to all other local authorities by September 2009.

Children's secretary Ed Balls said the programme would help families out of the poverty trap. He said, 'High-quality, affordable childcare is vitally important. By making this offer we are helping parents who would otherwise find it difficult to get financial help for childcare, to gain the skills and confidence they need to return to work.'
