A big build up - a developmental curriculum

Six areas of learning form the content of the QCA's foundation stage curriculum, and these link directly to the six sets of Early Learning Goals. It would be understandable, therefore, for practitioners to take this model at face value and translate it directly into a six-part programme for the children to follow, especially if these are the areas to be scrutinised by the new Ofsted inspectorate.

The QCA's guidelines, however, make it clear that the six divisions are to be used only as a framework to aid planning and evaluation and should not lead practitioners to divide up children's learning. The document stresses instead that effective education requires a relevant curriculum which builds on what children already know and can do.
