A month in the life of Harry Tobias

Harry had his first taste of solids this month, which he took readily. He was initially offered baby rice and then apple and carrot. Although Harry was very accepting of these foods he was clearly having a lot of tummy pain, so solids have been stopped temporarily, and an extra bottle of formula given to keep him satisfied. Harry weighs 6.1kg (13lb). He is growing fast and is now noticeably longer in the body. He is a very contented baby who smiles readily and chuckles a great deal. He responds with huge laughs when you catch his eye from across a room.

Harry has begun to hold on to items offered to him, shaking them vigorously, then dropping them in a uncontrolled manner. At times he hits himself hard with toys and needs to be well supervised to stop him hurting himself.

Harry focuses intently on everything that interests him. Big sister Jasmine was thrilled when he focused on the picture cards she was showing him, smiling at her.

Harry has had another scan of his kidneys, this time involving a dye being observed as it passed through his urinary system. The hospital is very pleased with him. They are happy that there is no urine reflux, and anticipate that he will soon be able to come off his antibiotics.

1 Parents are advised to place young infants on their back to sleep, as research has indicated a possible link to prone (on the tummy) sleeping and cot death.

2 Identifying a pseudo (not real) squint from an actual squint is achieved by looking at the reflection of an object in the infant's eyes when in bright light. If the object is reflected in both eyes in the same position, there is no actual squint. If the reflection is in different positions in each eye, an actual squint is present. Psuedo squints are often seen in infants with a wide bridge to their nose.

3 The term used to describe the regular regurgitation of milk is possetting.
