A parent's guide to a sense of place

Are we there yet? For most parents, setting off on a long car journey with young children is the mental equivalent of taking part in 'Mastermind'. Not only is there a need to plan strategically, but on the day, there are also two awkward questions that are likely to come up. The first one goes something along the lines of, 'Can you stop the car? I feel sick'. The second question comes soon after leaving home and is then repeated every few miles - 'Are we there yet?'

In view of the 'are we there yet?' question, you may be tempted to ask if your child is learning anything about geography. The answer is yes, but not in a formal way. If you live in England, your child's nursery or pre-school will be covering the Foundation Stage curriculum. In this curriculum is a section entitled 'Sense of place' and it is here that children first learn some of the skills they will later need when they start formally learning about geography.
