Breastmilk contains antibodies and other components not found in formula milk and creates a more acidic gut environment, all of which can help protect a baby against gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tract infections. There is also evidence to suggest that breastfeeding can reduce the risk of a baby developing allergies such as asthma and food intolerance. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months is recommended to provide the best protection.
