A parent's guide to painting

Many parents, for a whole host of reasons, leave painting experiences to the nursery. However, painting with your children and talking to them about their paintings is important. Here are a few pointers to get you started. Is painting a good thing?

Absolutely! Every art material offers children a different experience.

Paint and painting is an incredible sensory experience, and stimulation of the senses stimulates learning. Learning needs to be fed, and the senses gather the food that prompts, supports and sustains learning and understanding.

Painting also links children with the outside world. While they can use painting to learn about the world, children use painting to communicate and organise their own ideas, too. When either children or adults paint, they are in the process of learning - they are both making sense of and communicating their thinking to the wider world.
