Do brothers and sisters always squabble? Undoubtedly you will spend some time sorting out disagreements. But many squabbles are temporary difficulties and not a sign that something is seriously wrong.

Wait a little while to hear whether the children can sort out a problem themselves. If not, move in to help them in an even-handed way. Let them see that you do not assume it is always the older child who is in the wrong. Some younger children are accomplished wind-up artists.

It can be hard to hear harsh remarks like, 'I hate my sister'. But you will not get far by saying, 'Of course you don't hate her'. Show you have listened with feedback such as, 'You're not keen on Angie today. Any particular reason?' Perhaps this child felt that collecting badges was her special activity and now Angie wants to do it as well.
