A parent's guide to teaching children the value of money

Our children are bombarded with images, advertising and a continuous stream of new, must-have toys and clothes. Is it any wonder that they think it's only fair they have a new toy every time you pop out to buy the groceries? Teaching children about how to look after and use money wisely is crucial to helping them understand that it is not in limitless supply.

How do I get my child to understand the value of money?

The best way for a child to learn the value of money is to not get everything they want the moment they want it. Feel good about saying no when your child asks for that lollipop or new toy. Explain that it costs money, and that you don't want to or cannot use money for it now.

Play games that involve counting and adding to get children to understand big and little numbers. Add in games that allow shopping play. Talk to them about what is really happening when you hand over your debit or credit card at the end of your shopping.
