A quarter of Northumberland's children's centres under threat

Five children’s centres in Northumberland could close as the council looks to make millions of pounds of savings.

Northumberland County Council is proposing to de-register five of its 20 children’s centres as part of a bid to save £44 million over the next two years.

The five children’s centres under threat of closure, include Pegswood, which is run by Action for Children, and Cramlington East, which is run by Barnardo’s. The three remaining centres Choppington, Lynemouth, and Ponteland are council-run.

Barnardo’s manages three other children’s centres on behalf of Northumberland County Council.

Under the plans, outlined in the council’s consultation that closed last week, the services currently offered at the ‘under-used’ children’s centres would be delivered from alternative venues, such as libraries or community centres.
