The company, whose acronym is short for Action for Employment, is one of the UK's largest providers of training, employment and business solutions. Last week the Sure Start Unit awarded it the contract to run the Childcare Business Support and Development Programme until March 2004.

Catherine Ashton, Sure Start minister, said, 'I want every parent to be able to find good quality childcare, early learning and family support that they can afford and that suit their needs. This is essential if we are to ensure that every child gets a sure start in life.

'We are supporting the development of integrated, high quality services that parents can rely on. A4e will help us provide business support to childcare providers so that they increase their skills and knowledge.' The programme, which has been developed as part of the Government's National Childcare Strategy, will include training workshops for more than 10,000 childcare professionals at 100 locations across England, while many more will be able to receive helpful guidance directly. The workshops, which will be free, will be held during the day, in evenings and at weekends.
