Abducted children

Nearly 500 children were abducted from the UK last year and taken abroad illegally, according to figures obtained by the Guardian.

Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act showed anestimated 470 children were reported abducted in 336 separate cases in2008. There were 30 cases of children being taken illegally to Pakistan,23 to the US, 22 to Ireland and 21 to Spain. Other destinations wereAustralia, France and Egypt. Most abductions were the result ofmarriages between different nationalities breaking down and the parentwithout custody kidnapping the child.
