Abnormal cortical development

Abnormal cortical development following premature birth shown by altered allometric scaling of brain growth Images were taken of brain growth in 113 extremely premature infants; 63 were assessed to see how they were developing mentally at around two years of age. The surface area of human brains grows more than the volume. After premature birth this pattern of growth is disrupted, and the amount of disruption of growth seems to predict whether there is delayed development two years later. The earlier the birth, the greater the disruption. Kapellou, O and others, Public Library of Science: Medicine 3(8): Aug 2006.
