Accidents involving child pedestrians

Accidents involving child pedestrians could be reduced with the help of 17.6m in Government funding being given to councils in some deprived areas of England, after research revealed that children from disadvantaged backgrounds were five times more likely to be killed or seriously injured on the roads than their peers from the highest socio-economic group. Ten councils in the Greater Manchester area that have the highest child pedestrian casualty rates in England will be the first to benefit from the funding. Transport minister John Spellar said, 'By improving play areas, looking at after-school provision and educating children about road dangers, councils can ensure that poorer children are not penalised because of where they live.'
