Action Research

The charity Action Research has changed its name after more than 50 years to Action Medical Research. Last week it said its goal remained the same - to improve health and quality of life through medical research. Action Medical Research is behind such medical breakthroughs including the UK polio vaccine, ultrasound scanning in pregnancy, the artificial hip operation, and discovering the link between folic acid and preventing spina bifida. Recently the charity identified the faulty gene that causes a form of cleft palate, and showed how warming therapy reduces surgical wound infections. Simon Moore, its chief executive, said, 'Our new name emphasises what we do, while giving us that all-important continuity with our past.' The charity is currently funding 100 separate projects around the UK.
