Activities to tie in with routines

Part of a parent's or carer's role is to make sure activities are at the appropriate level for an individual child. Each baby or toddler will develop at their own rate, so ensure they are not under-stimulated or over-challenged. Experimenting, exploring, creating and communicating through the activity is more important than expecting the children to achieve an end goal - for example, correctly finding pairs of fastenings in 'Do It Up!' (see right). Bath time

Bath time

* Gather a range of items used at bath time.

* Place a small amount of water and bubbles in a basin. (Ensure that the children are always closely supervised when using water.)

* Invite the children to wash a doll in the basin, using sponges, face cloth and soap.

* Encourage the children to complete bath-time routines using the doll to dry, brush, rinse and so on.

Bubble, bubble

* Make bubbles by trying one of the following recipes:

* Mix 1 cup of water, 1/2 tablespoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of glycerine (available from chemists) and 2 tablespoons of washing-up liquid.
