Activity strategy to get them moving

Children should spend at least one hour a day on most days of the week doing moderate physical activity, according to a report published last week by the Scottish Executive. Scotland's first ever Physical Activity Strategy seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of Scots of all ages, from babies to the elderly. It points out that regular physical activity from an early age reduces the risk factors for heart and circulatory disease and helps prevent weight gain.

Inactivity increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, accidents and injuries and is responsible for 42 per cent of deaths from coronary heart disease, 25 per cent of deaths from stroke and 25 per cent of deaths from colon cancer. A study carried out in 2001 found that 8.6 per cent of three-to four-year-olds in Scotland were obese.
