A topic on transport offers many varied opportunities to develop children's ICT skills in a fun and meaningful way Role play

* Telephoning for a taxi, using a petrol pump, buying a train ticket from an automated machine, waiting at the traffic lights and checking bus times on the internet are just some of the many examples in which we use our ICT skills to help us plan or make journeys. All these examples can be replicated in role-play activities in a topic on transport, so providing a meaningful learning context for young children.

* It is not always necessary to provide real or fully operational equipment when the activity aims to develop children's understanding of the purposes of ICT. For instance, a 'pretend' check-in desk as part of airport role-play (see page 12) or old telephones will still help raise children's awareness of ICT.
