All teachers need to be properly trained in child protection, says the NSPCC after its research found that half of all teachers are involved in at least one child protection case in their first 18 months of teaching and yet many lacked sufficient training to deal with it. Teachers selected to take a lead role in child protection said they wanted more training, with nine out of ten concerned about how best to support children who reported abuse. The NSPCC said teachers needed to understand the three 'Rs' of child protection - recognising the signs, responding appropriately and knowing when and who to report it to. They should have child protection training once every two years in partnership with other key professionals such as social workers and be kept up to date about changes in legislation. The NSPCC's call coincided with a review by the Department for Education and Skills of its child protection guidance for education services.
