All to play for

As an early years and primary educational consultant and member of the advisory body on the national play review, I welcomed this year's Playday (News, 7 August) and call on all children to exercise their right to play on every day of the year. I also urge all parents, teachers and those who work with children to support them in their playing by giving them time and space to play alone, and to play with their friends and families. Adults also need to engage in play activities with children and enjoy the enchantment of childhood once more.

Playing is an essential activity that needs to be highly valued by adults, families, communities, schools and the whole of society. It is a vital aspect of children's learning.

So children - exercise your right to play!
