An open letter to Germaine Greer

Dear Ms Greer, Having admired you for many years as an intelligent woman making a positive contribution to intellectual debate in the field of education, I was saddened to read your comment made at the Edinburgh International Book Festival that 'the childcare system consists of amateurs without qualifications' (Quote of the week, 22 August).

Having admired you for many years as an intelligent woman making a positive contribution to intellectual debate in the field of education, I was saddened to read your comment made at the Edinburgh International Book Festival that 'the childcare system consists of amateurs without qualifications' (Quote of the week, 22 August).

I qualified in 1973 with the NNEB certificate at a time when the Labour MPRenee Short was promising free state childcare for all under-fives. I have worked, for meagre pay, in different branches - in a primary school, as a hospital playworker, as a childminder and latterly in a private day nursery. In all these settings the high level of commitment and the professional approach of my colleagues has been obvious to anyone who cared to observe them.
