An urgent review of the vetting system that clears people to work with children has been announced by education secretary Ruth Kelly, with proposals for tightening up to be brought in next month. The system came under scrutiny last week when Ms Kelly admitted that a 'small number' of registered sex offenders had been cleared to work in English schools. The review will assess how the 'greatest possible alignment' can be achieved between the two official registers of people deemed unsuitable to work with children - the Department of Education's List 99 and the sex offenders' register.
