The EU is now a union of 27 countries, with a mission to improve the economic competitiveness of Europe. As one small aspect of that mission, the EU over many years has scrutinised the role of women and children. Should women have equal employment rights with men and if so, what can be done to guarantee them? How can work be reconciled with family responsibilities? What kind of educational policies would enable children to grow up as productive citizens?
One phrase bandied about is 'social cohesion' - how can everyone benefit from Europe's economic success, and conversely, how can those on the margins of society be protected, especially women and children existing in poverty?
