Children living just a few miles apart in UK cities can have vastly different life expectancies, according to a report published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) earlier this month.
Closing the Gap in a Generation: Health equity through action on the social determinants of health found that a child born in a Glasgow suburb can expect to have a life 28 years shorter than another living only 13 kilometres away. Commenting on these findings, chief executive of Child Poverty Action Group, Kate Green, says, 'Poverty is poison. If you are one of the 3.9 million children living below the poverty line in Britain, you can expect to die sooner.
