Q I like to take the children in my nursery on occasional outings, to a local park or even on a special coach trip. Am I liable if anything goes wrong?
A The provider will remain responsible for the health and safety of the children throughout. However, organised outings can be valuable experiences for young children and, in the words of the Health and Safety Executive, 'sensible health and safety is about managing risks and not eliminating them. Proper risk assessment should result in precautions appropriate to particular circumstances.'
The key to successful outings is planning. The DfES publication Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits, which can be downloaded from the DfES website, is primarily for schools, but much of the comprehensive and practical advice will apply equally to nurseries. The guidance covers risk assessment, suggested staff ratios, involvement of parents and volunteer helpers and the requirements of children with special needs.
