A motion regretting that a push towards full employment for parents would 'institutionalise' children was passed by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers at its annual conference last week. Delegates challenged education secretary Alan Johnson about the Government's extended schools policy, with one asking, 'Will the extended schools agenda and the increasing provision of holiday pay schemes further erode family ties? Are parents being led to believe the best thing for their children is to be in peer groups looked after by other people?'
