Melynda Standring, a nursery nurse who works in schools in Wales, told the Professional Association of Teachers' annual conference in Cardiff that nursery nurses had become highly skilled in response to the changing needs of children and teachers, but their increased professionalism had not been recognised.
She said that introducing threshold pay for teachers in England and Wales without also rewarding nursery nurses for their contribution to improved educational standards was 'as ill-conceived as the poll tax'.
She said, 'If everyone does count, if all of the team members have helped to raise the standards, why have a select few received additional reward?
