Learning intention: Find out about features in the environment

Traffic and transport fill the streets around us. Journeys to school or nursery, to shops or to visit friends and relatives can offer exciting chances for children to look at different vehicles. Activities that help them recognise and label these vehicles will ensure that they develop a wide vocabulary as well as a good understanding of the way transport affects our lives.

1 On a small scale

* At this early age, children's knowledge will be stimulated by playing with miniature toys, such as train sets, garages, cars, boats and diggers. Children enjoy making up their own stories and giving voices and personalities to their vehicles.
