Autism Awareness Week

A parliamentary reception and a seminar on holistic therapies are among events being held around Scotland this week to mark Autism Awareness Week from 17 to 24 May, organised by the National Autistic Society. Its theme this year is 'Planning for life'. The reception at the Scottish Parliament was hosted by Elaine Smith MSP, co-convener of the Cross Party Group on Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Speakers included Robert McKay, national co-ordinator for NAS Scotland, who said the aim was to inform parliamentarians about some of the difficulties faced by people with autism and the need for collaborative working to establish support services for adults in local communities. Professionals and parents of children with autism in Aberdeenshire are invited to attend a seminar on holistic therapies at the Banchory Academy Community Education Centre on 22 May. For more information, contact NAS Scotland on 0141 221 8090 or see the website www.nas.org.uk.
