Avoid red-eye shift

The idea of 24-hour nursery provision (News, 5 April) sounds good initially, but I would be concerned over the health and safety issues involved in handing over a child in the morning to a parent who had been awake for possibly the past 18 hours. Shifts are rarely a one-off night shift and so this may become more serious as the week progressed. I think there are more appropriate services available at present, such as a nanny.
